Educating each patient that walks through our doors on how to have excellent dental hygiene is what we strive to do here at Westpark Pediatric Dentistry in Richmond, Texas. Most people think very little about their teeth and even forget to do their simple oral hygiene at home, especially children. Being a pediatric dental practice, we want to teach all of our patients and their parents how to best take care of young teeth.
What we eat daily greatly affects the amount and the type of bacteria that coats our teeth throughout the day. Bad bacteria can cause cavities, gum disease, and if it’s left alone long enough, a missing tooth. Professionally cleaning your child’s teeth twice a year and teaching them effective at-home dental hygiene habits will decrease their chances of dental issues arising.
It is very important to come to see us on your scheduled cleanings, but we can only do so much in keeping your child’s teeth clean, we need your help. Here are some at-home dental habits that may seem easy, but need to be done to ensure a healthy smile.
Eating less sugary food will decrease the risk of cavities forming. We aren’t saying not to enjoy sugary food, but limiting the consumption will greatly affect your child’s smile.
Brushing twice a day for 2 minutes is expected of everyone who has teeth and wants to keep them clean. For younger children, brushing on their own might be difficult and they might miss some places. Helping them brush will remove the most bacteria.
Although we all forget it sometimes, flossing is an excellent oral habit to fight decay and cavities.
For infants, we suggest brushing their gums with damp cloths after eating. Once the first tooth has erupted, bring them in for their first visit! There Dr. Mila will give you tips on how to keep your baby’s tooth or teeth clean.
Intensively paying attention and helping your child while brushing their teeth will help teach them the correct way and keep their teeth clean. If you have any questions about things you can do to help your child contact us at Westpark Pediatric Dentistry in Richmond, Texas.
